My child looks wired could it be Gluten

Can Gluten cause brain inflammation?

If your child has autism or  ADHD, you probably know how hard it can be to deal with their symptoms. And sometimes, it can be tough to figure out what causes or worsens their condition. You may not know this, but one possible culprit could be Gluten. It is a protein in many commonly used foods, like wheat, barley, rye, etc. Gluten can have adverse effects on your health. It can even make the symptoms of ADHD worse. In the clinic, we see profound results when parents remove Gluten from their children's diets.

Research has shown that kids with autism and ADHD might have a higher chance of having celiac disease or gluten sensitivity than kids without. Gluten can upset the stomach, causing bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea. For kids with autism and ADHD, this can make it hard to pay attention in class and learn new things because they might feel uncomfortable or distracted by their symptoms.

Gluten sensitivity is an exaggerated immune response to Gluten that leads to inflammation throughout the body and can trigger an autoimmune response in which the immune system attacks and destroys the body or brain tissue.

But wait, there's more! Gluten might also affect your kid's brain and nervous system, which could make autism and  ADHD symptoms worse. It can cause inflammation and oxidative stress, making your child feel foggy, forgetful, and moody. This could be frustrating for them because it can make it even harder to concentrate and do well in school.

Peptides from Gluten and casein can react with opiate receptors in the brain, mimicking the effects of opiate drugs. These compounds have been shown to react with the brain's temporal lobes, which are involved in speech and auditory integration. – Beta-casomorphin-7 has the potential to elicit opioid activity in the digestive tract, neurological and immune systems1

Gluten can cause leaky gut syndrome. This makes your gut lining too permeable, allowing toxins and other bad stuff into your bloodstream. This can cause inflammation, make it harder for your child's body to absorb essential nutrients, and affect your child’s growth and development.

Gluten is more a brain and nervous system issue than a gut issue; therefore, to get a more accurate  report on your child's gluten sensitivity, you need to go past screening  for celiac and request a complete gluten antibody screen which will include

  • alpha gliadin
  • omega gliadin
  • gamma gliadin
  • deamidated gliadin
  • wheat germ agglutinin
  • gluteomorphin
  • prodynorphin
  • transglutaminase-2
  • transglutaminase-3
  • transglutaminase-6

Sources of Gluten

  • wheat
  • barley
  • rye
  • spelt
  • Kamut
  • Oats (Unless marked gluten-free) Oats are primarily grown in rotation with wheat.

*Side note - There are several hidden sources of Gluten, and you need to read the label to ensure you are gluten-free. Some hidden sources are

modified starch, artificial emulsifiers, food stabilizers,  malt extract, dextrins, artificial colouring, and clarifying agents.

While going gluten-free is doable and has impressive results, it can be challenging as a few foods can cross-react with Gluten, and it can be daunting to start cooking differently . Therefore sometimes, we may need to consider adding enzymes that support the breakdown of Gluten. We love Digest Spectrum in the clinic, as it helps digest the spectrum of gluten strains. However, no supplement should substitute for a healthy diet. If you need help with testing, supplementing and implementing a  healthy healing diet.
